Digital Environments
Research
We recently went on a trip to the Dennis Severs House on Folgate street and instantly I was amazed and impressed by it. I really wanted to do something similar to the design of the house and rooms. I liked the feeling of the place, it was quiet, a little sullen, if not rather eery. It was always incredibly reconstructed to look lived in. Also, since there was no light within other than from the windows and few candles, the colours of the house looked quite dull and dead. However, there was a lot of character to the rooms just from the items and layout.
Below are some examples of the house and how some of the rooms looked.

I really like the look of this. It is a 3D piece, similar to how I want my furniture to look in 3D.
I also really liked this artist's version of the hobbit house. I liked the lighting and warmth of this, although my idea is slightly less warm. Also, the last image is of the various assets he modeled which look really cool.

Concept Art
Here are concept pieces I did, inspired by what I saw at the Dennis Severs house. I wanted an old look to the house so I went with specific furniture and moods. I took into account lighting as well to set the atmosphere.
To be honest I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing when I made these images. I am not very good at environment art, but it was a challenge and quite fun to try out. I used specific colours and patterns that really reflected the victorian/old era.
Room Plan
Below is my room plan for the main study. I used images from the internet and made a collage of each wall including the basic furniture on each image. I have not included all the items I would like to add in the room, but I used this to get a feel of what I might want on each wall as well as their position.
Above: This is a set of collages I did to determine what would be on each wall of my proposed idea. I got all the images from the internet and used photoshop to collage it.
Below: This is a table of what a victorian table might have looked like. There is a glass of wine, candle, a pocket watch, parchment and an ink pot and pen. Again I used photoshop to collage it and some nifty transform tools.

After speaking to my tutor, I was inspired to take a different approach to my environment. I was going to go with my above idea, but was informed I could do a famous person's living quarters if I chose to.
Thus I slightly changed my idea, but the whole room and victorian theme still stood, I just had something a little different in mind with it.

BBC SHERLOCK
I chose to do my environment based on the BBC Sherlock's living room. I love the show and I find his place very quirky and actually rather depressing inside. There are skulls and bullet holes in the wall as well as paper and books everywhere.
Above are some of the images of BBC Sherlock's main living room in Baker Street. I like the fact that the room is rather dreary and dark despite the large double windows. And that the lighting is rather sparse even when the lamps are on. This reflects the time period in which Sherlock is originally set in (despite this being a modern version) and I hope to at least get some semblance to this place in my own digital environment.
My designs
Below are some of my concepts that I did on brown paper. I used ink, white pencils and watercolour to do it.
I wanted to get a kinda moody and old atmosphere of the room, but still retain some modernity like the original design of the room in the show.
I will most likely add a lot more quirky pieces like a skull and some random pieces of paper in certain areas to make it looked lived in and to retain the essence of the original Sherlock room I am basing my environment on. I wouldn't say I am digitally recreating the room exactly, but more like recreating the essence of the room.

Here is a coloured version of an image above. Here you can see the general colour and mood of the piece. My work won't perhaps be exactly like Sherlock's room, but I feel it will have the essence.
The layout
Here is a really handy layout I found on the internet that shows the general layout of Sherlock's flat, including the main room. I will use this to plan out where to lay everything and make it look extra on point.
