Research and Concept Art
LO1: I continued on from the pirate project to be the concept artist for the new idea. This was still a big challenge for me as I don't draw animals very often.
RESEARCH
LO2: To be honest, I was amazingly lost when it came to making concepts for a bear. I don't tend to draw animals so I was already floundering in how I would tackle a bear concept. There was always the fear of making him look too human or too real because those are two things I like doing. I draw humans, and like things in proportion, so I really had to break how I usually approach things.
I researched polar bears and cartoon bears, getting the general gist. I wanted my bear to look different, but definitely bear like. Polar bear like specifically. However, the more I researched the more I just realised I needed to get on with it and it doesn't matter if it didn't look exactly like a bear. That wasn't the point.

Concept art
LO5: It was a bit confusing at first. We hadn't really seen any new script or the new idea breakdown so I was wondering what we had to concept.
LO5 + LO6: This idea came much later than the Pirates idea we had, so it was a bit more of a rush to think of things. Coupled with the other projects, balancing time was a bother, but had to be done. The concept artists who had previously been working on the pirates project were a bit lost as we had had no word from the directors. So we had to post on the group page to get any word. However, Sam then did explain that he wanted the chance for dissertation to be done with so we could continue with this.
LO3 + LO5: Here I went straight into trying out how to draw the Polar Bear. Since I am unused to animals, I was just testing the waters. I wanted to provide variety, so I did a lot of faces. Some came out quite creepy to be honest, but it was a lesson for me. People in the group liked the design, so I knew it wasn't that much a of a fail!
LO3 + LO5: Here I also posted an Eskimo design (below) and it was well recieved. However, Sam had a few things to change such as pushing the Eskimo further by hiding his face. This was so they didn't have to model the face and most of the characters movement would help convey his emotions instead of his face.
LO3 + LO5: I did a general concept art of the idea in general. I tried to capture the story in an image. I was also practicing environments. Again, just like animals, environments are quite hard for me. Perspective is quite difficult in terms of space and environment, so this was a good challenge for me. I don't really know why I did it in a square shape as well, but since it was just a concept, it wasn't so bad.
LO3 + LO5: I posted this Eskimo design, following what Sam had said about hiding his face. I found the design quite funny and simple enough for modelling. Also, I did different colour designs, but didnn't go too bold as I took into account that he wouldn't be so colourful in Antarctica (or wherever it is set). I didn't get much feedback on it though.
LO3 + LO5: It came to a point where since there wasn't much direction or communication, I just picked one polar bear design and started doing emotion and situation concepts where the bear was doing something or interacting. This made me feel more confident drawing a bear type creature. Since I drew him quite a lot here, I got used to it a bit more.
I posted the Eskimo and poses too and got some good feedback about how they wanted to the Eskimo to be in comparison to the bear. Also, to try more shapes, which I agreed with.

LO3 + LO5: I then tried a few different things. I wanted the designs to still be simple for modelling purposes so I did these. He had to be small and a bit compact looking in comparison to the bigger polar bear.
LO3 + LO5: We discussed which one looked best from my shape tests above, but we knew we couldn't make the Eskimo too fat because the bear would be. I thought a small and skitty looking character would look cute and fun against the bear. Sam said he had liked design 1 and personally I liked that one too. It is actually similar to my design earlier, but he is a bit smaller. I gave him really small legs, but big hands just to make him look extra small and goofy. I really like this Eskimo because he is just cute!
LO3 + LO5: This was the scales between the two characters. Although looking back, the bear could have looked bigger or the eskimo smaller.
LO5: Sam then added his own details over my drawing of the bear. I did not mind and thought it was a good idea.
LO3 + LO5: I was asked to do some props just before our formative group pitch, so I had to be as quick as possible to design some of the props the bear would use to try and get through the ice to get the fish. They were literally simple concepts for the pitch and I did not have much time as I had to do storyboards for other groups and this group as well.
Storyboards
LO1: Here is a general plot line. There was not a specific version as they kept changing, but this is the brief Sam came up with and sent to me and Lisa.
LO3: Here are my super quick storyboards. I like doing the boards like this first because I just need a very general idea of it first before taking my time to finish a board.
LO4: Here is actually a storyboard of the last part of the piece. I didn not have a lot of time for the whole thing, so we split the storyboards between me, Lisa and Sam. I was a bit confused as to what was going on with who was doing what to be honest, but I was really tired by here and finished this storyboard quite quickly. I feel bad I did not have much time for it, but it wasn't supposed to be a really amazing storyboard, just enough to get the idea by. If anything, this little segment would have been okay as the whole FMP, but Sam and Max had ambitious ideas and wanted more. I understood that and thought it was feasible, but whether it is or not, I don't know.

I had to leave this group after the formatives as they did not need concept artists anymore and had no more work for any of us. So I had to move on. It was fun working and drawing things I never have before, but I was ready to move on.
I think I learnt mostly about drawing animals on this project, as well as communication. I can now draw a bear a bit better than before, but I think just drawing the different poses of the characters was the best part. I am very eager to see the outcome of this project, even if I am not seeing it to the end. It has great potential and hopefully everything goes well.
