THIS IS Our old Idea
Before we even had the idea for our Polar Bear project, the project we had been working on was about Pirates.
The idea was that there would be a kind of competition for the prisoners to win their freedom. The Captain would be the judge, and the prisoners would come in to perform.
LO1: I was really interested in this piece just from the pitch. It seemed fun and something I would enjoy working on. It seemed like vibrant piece that would be good to be a part of. So I joined as a concept artist. I was already challenging myself just on the content of the piece. It was pirates and it was something I had never really drawn before.

Research
LO2: For this project, I wanted to be a concept artist. So this is the role I chose. I chose this group because the characters and story seemed so fun and entertaining, that I thought doing concepts for it would be a good challenge.
Concept Art
LO5: First I had to ask about the types of concepts they wanted. We had discussed a bit in class and it was pretty much open, but I just wanted to double check if it was okay to have rough designs.
LO3: So here are some of the really rough designs I did. These were of the Captain and the entertainers. These were rough and just to get me started.
LO3: I then went into photoshop and started doing more coloured concepts. I really tried to do something different and to suit a more childish style. I don't usually draw like this, as I usually use outlines and colour. But here I went straight into colour.
LO5: So I posted them on the Pirates facebook group page and the director, Sam, liked the designs.

LO3: (Above) At the start there was really no specification to what kind of look the captain was meant to be. I knew he would be a bit grumpy, but at the early stage I just went with random designs for him. I really enjoy the sketchy look and wanted to be able to draw like that, so I used this project to be sketchy and messy with the designs.
(Below)
Here are some designs for the entertainer/prisoners. There are 3 types, the juggler, the matador and the magician.
The first performer looks feeble and scared and skinny like a prisoner. Then he was supposed to do an amazing trick, like juggling with fire or swords. The second performer was the magician and he would perform a cool magic trick, yet the captain would not be impressed again. I wanted to show different possible magicians. One I made look a bit ostentatious, yet still keeping with the pirate them, then a cloaked mysterious version and the other with a typical pirate look. I made him look blond and a bit fancy looking just to differentiate his design from the others.
The matador had to look confident, but end of being quite a failure during his performance. I made sure his colours were bold. And it was the idea that the pirates would capture prisoner from around the world.

LO5: I always made sure to keep communication and posted for the group to see.
LO3: I added more character designs and did loads of very differnt designs. I loved doing these because I was getting more used to the sketchy style and it felt freeing. I notice the one I dislike most is the one where I had outlines and tried to make it neat and like how I usually draw (the second picture below, the one with the ginger beard.)
LO3: (Above) I knew this design would be way off, but it was worth it just to get it down and see it. The captain here looks a bit too casual and maybe even like he is a henchman instead. Also, he looks far too active and strong, despite being old.
LO3: (Below) I think this design went down well with both the director and my tutor. It captures the emotion of the captain and he does look grumpy as he should do. I tried to give him the classic scowl and added a scar to make him look tougher and a bit scarier. Even the colours were a bit dour and dreary with the browns/purple shade.

LO5 + LO6: Unfortunately we had to drop this idea as we discussed with each other and out tutor and it became apparent that perhaps this idea was far too ambitious. There were so many characters and so many ideas that it became a confusing and messy plot. It was a shame, but I understood why we might've had to change the plot or tone it down. Several idea were thrown about, but one of Max's ideas was chosen eventually of a Polar Bear trying to catch a fish. The Polar Bear would use any means to catch this one fish below ice, but it finds itself failing each time.
We were a bit behind schedule due to his change, but it wasn't so bad, so we had loads of time to re-concept and have stuff prepared for the formative.
