Backgrounds
Week 5
LO1: I was asked to be a background artist after having done the concept work earlier. Rebecca liked the concept art/watercolour style I used so she wanted the same look throughout her backgrounds.
LO3 + LO5: She gave me a first simple shot and described what layers were needed. I did so I came up with the above.
WEEK 6 and 7
We had enhancement week during week 6 so there was little work to do.
LO5: However I did come in one day so Rebecca could give me some visual notes on the shot I produced. We discussed a little of what she wanted and I continued to work on it. (Her notes below)

LO4 Here is the final piece I produced for it which she would then manipulate in compositing.
LO5 It was important to be able to pass on files quickly and efficiently. We used google drive as it was large enough and easy enough to pass files around. Here is every layer I used for the shot to make the final. This was important to seperate them so it was easy for Krax to composite.

Week 8
LO5 Here are further notes Rebecca gave me on facebook as to what she needed from the backgrounds. It is essential to communicate often, which thankfully was easy between us.
LO3 (Above) Here is a background shot for shot 2, which krax would overlay with some 3D elements.
LO3 (Below) I actually mistook the colour for shot 2, and changed it back to purpe as it should be. I also had to make sure the shape matched the render test Krax did. So I had to warp and reshape the swirl I did.

LO4 Below are some background shots she wanted which were actually taken from earlier concepts. She liked them enough to want them again.
WEEK 9
LO3 Here are more pieces I did which didn't make the final cut due to a misunderstanding (you can see below)
LO5 It turned out I didn;t need to recreate the green parts and only the background was needed for the shots. This taught me to always double check with the director!
LO4 Here are some easy backgrounds I did just for various shots here and their. They are to be used in more than one shot to save time.
EASTER HOLIDAYS (WEEK 11, 12, 13)
LO3: For Moon Child, it was a rather quiet easter holidays in terms of work I had to do. I was given a shot to do which I pretty much finished early on . But here are some of the works in progress I did for it. I did many variations that she could pick from.
LO3 + LO5: (Above) I always made sure to communicate back and forth, so here Rebecca gave me some feedback which I then added to the piece (Below)
LO3 + LO5: Again, there was always more feedback and I made many changes and variations so she could get a different idea and feel. I was still getting used to how Rebecca wanted me to work, so I made sure to do variations to help me find it.
LO3 + LO5: (Above) By this point, it was getting a bit confusing as to what she wanted for shot 5. I also started on shot 1 (Below) which would introduce the world. She decribed it as being like an explosion, with ink, and petal-like parts moving outwards. So I had to layer the shot. This is what I came up with. Rebecca liked it, but since we were unsure how to do the actual shot in composite, we decided to leave the shot until later.
LO3: (Above) This is actually Rebecca's draw over of my shot. She asked if she could work on top of my drawing and came up with this.
LO5: The one on the right was one of my draw overs, but there was miscommunication once more and I found out I didn't have to do the shot since we were going to use her draw over. |
WEEK 14
LO5: For Shot 19, Rebecca sent me some renders of where Draco would be placed as well as the clouds that colour him.
LO3 + LO5: I send over a general layout of the clouds which she said was good but wanted to look more interesting. I then did another cloud formation which she liked.
LO3 + LO5: (Above)I then did some cloud type layers, but as I was still finding the style, was told they needed to look more like the wispy lines she drew over in shot 5.
LO3 + LO5: She gave me some visual notes as I was really stuck and unsure how to do it, which I then followed.
She gave me some more visual notes to follow.
She gave me some more visual notes to follow.
LO3: I made the changes she suggested, but found myself confused once more. I wasn't sure how to make the foreground 'feel more foreground'.
LO5: She then explained to me and told me that the thickness of the lines made the difference.
LO5: She then explained to me and told me that the thickness of the lines made the difference.
LO3: I made the changes which she then approved of and this is the result. Despite all the changes, I can see what she wanted. I now understand a bit better how she wants the clouds and layers to look.
WEEK 15
LO3: I received shot 13 and 22 to do. I had to make a nebula-like background for shot 13 that Draco would rest inside of. Shot 22 was a ground plane that the girl would walk across. Here are my variations that I worked on. Throughout I would send them to Rebecca and get feedback along the way.
LO5: She gave me notes on how to change the layers for shot 22 and shot 13. Visual notes are always really helpful.
LO3: Here I continued to work on the shots. She wanted the nebula to look more wispy lined and less photographic. I had used many images and painted over to make it look less painty, but it still needed more lines and wisps. I also did an black and white outline of what Shot 22 could look like before colouring.

LO5: She gave me a few more notes on shot 13 but the changes for shot 22 were quite vast. It was turning out to be quite a complicated shot to do. I think Rebecca was quite unsure how she wanted the shot herself.
LO3: I made more changes to shot 13 and shot 22.

WEEK 16
LO3 + LO5: Rebecca decided the shot was going to pan, so I did a long shot of shot 13. I did this and got more feedback as to what to change and add.
LO3 + LO5: There was a bit of a problem with the file Rebecca gave me to change. It was shot 19 and I had to keep reworking it with Draco as reference. I continued to make changes to every shot she gave and she continued to produce feedback.
LO4: Here is the final shot 13 to be used for the animation.
Week 17
LO4: This was a really simple shot she wanted with the causeway leading across the screen. I manipulated shot 5 and added a few extra elements. She liked it so we went ahead with it as it was.
