WEEKS 4 to 5
Storyboarding
Here are some of my storyboard panels that we then used for the animatic. I was assigned the end where Pluto reaches Mercury and tells the Sun about his problem. And then the Sun scares the Earth away whilst Pluto joins the other planets and it is all happy days.

Animatic
This is the animatic we did in time for the mid-project critique. We knew by this point we wanted to be working 2D so with this in mind, everybody went down to work on their parts for the animatic.
At the time, we didn't think it was bad to split the animatic up into parts and then we'd make them animatics. But looking back, it was a pretty horrible idea as the outcome became a convoluted and just a general mess that nobody could follow.
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT -- Mid Term Critique
Five weeks into the project, we had a critique which involved showing our animatic to the class and tutors in order to get feedback. It was a new experience and although rather scary and intimidating, it was also very helpful in developing our ideas.
We did come across a few problems that were pointed out such as confusion as to which planet was what and the flow of the story. This was down to the fact that we used 6 different animatic parts and made life much harder for ourselves. Also, we hadn't utilised After Effects or Premiere Pro much at all, which could have made our animatic more effective.
The biggest problem our tutor pointed out was the actual plot itself. It had become convoluted due to different people wanting different things. What was once a really simple story of Pluto going from A to B became a big mix of ideas that we tried to squeeze because we thought we had to make it very meaningful and understandable for the audience.
In the end we took many of these pointers and accepted the fact that we had to redo parts of our story to make it work well, clearly and effectively.
Basically
- Fix the plot. There is no concrete ending and the plot has become confusing.
- Get the visual style down.
- Just generally, be clear on what you want to portray and how.

ANIMATIC REDO and Story Edit
We had to redo the whole animatic with a slightly edited story because the whole flashback idea and an ending we weren't even sure of ourselves was really hindering our process. Finally we decided to just redo the beginning and end, keeping the middle the same, with the same journey, but for different reasons. A few of us sat around to make a quick story change as we really didn't have time to think any of it through for days so we had to make quick decisions.
In the end we came up with a story that Mercury sends a postcard to Pluto with a picture of Mercury and The Sun and the words 'Wish You Were Here'. This makes Pluto a little annoyed because he does wish he was there, so he starts his journey from one side to another. The journey in the middle is generally the same as before.
Pluto passes Neptune, Uranus and Saturn before meeting Jupiter. He asks Jupiter to fling him past through the Asteroid Belt and when he does he zooms past Mars. When Pluto reaches Earth however, he experiences some problems because Earth is still the bully. He is saved by the lovely Venus who helps him on his way before reaching Mercury who is surprised to see him. They finally take a picture together with the Sun and subsequently sends another postcard off to the next furthest planets: Uranus and Neptune.
Below are some of the thumbnails I did for the new animatic. Considering the first animatic was a bit of a let down because all of us had such different styles that it became confusing, I took the chance to single handedly do the next animatic so it was consistent and clear enough. I felt that since it was my idea in the first place, I had to be the one to determine the final shots for it. We had wasted too much time so I had to go for it without too much reliance on the others' opinion.

Animatic Images Redone
Below are the images that I drew in photoshop that were used for the animatic.
As you can see, unlike my first animatic piece, I used colour for this one. I wanted to be as clear as possible as to who was who.
I am actually very proud of these animatic pieces as it took me a very long day to complete, but thankfully I had thumbnailed the shots before so I knew generally what I was drawing.

FINAL ANIMATIC REDONE
This is the final animatic we redid with all the images I redrew. Matt timed everything out for the animatic with the music and it really timed well. A few extra shots could have been added, but generally it showed the story much clearer than our first animatic.
