Environments
We had to do a few environments to go with our story and characters. Since mine is Native American/Tribal type theme, I went with deserts and forests etc.
These are a few of my environments for my story. During our lesson we had a brief to draw three environments (the character's home, the place leading up to the trouble and the place where the trouble or problem was happening.)These were done on photoshop.
I first did these in black and white with low opacity and flow on the brush, and then by using specific photoshop brushes and the photoshop textures and filters, I made a textured layer that I could multiply or overlay onto the environments to make them look illustrative. Originally I drew my own textures and overlayed them on top. However, looking back after our lesson, it I decided for the first and last image to use a paper texture and did further editing with a scratchy brush on multiply and overlay settings. With the second image I made use of the sharpen filter and cloud brush.

These concepts were meant to be a part of a story. Like the beginning, middle and end. The beginning is set where the father and son's home is. So a desert place, much like the native americans. Next was where the young son was meant to get lost. The final image was the climax where the boy is chased to the cliff edge by a pack of wolves. In the end I decided only to model the father and not the son, but these images still helped reflect the parts of the story that I originally had in mind.
Specialist Subject: Concept Art
Jenny's Alien Treehouse
For my specialist subjects, I chose Concept Art and Modelling. For my project I was to do modelling, for someone else I did concept art. Jenny apporached me with her idea of an Alien Treehouse. An Alien UFO that crashed on a tree and was unable to be fixed. So the Alien decided to make the tree house their home and live of earth, but obviously with their customised treehouse. She gave me basic guidelines of what she wanted and I went to work. Here are the results:
Alien Treehouse (exterior)
Alien Treehouse (exterior)
Stairway to top (interior)
Room at top (interior)
These were the three images I did for her to give her a concept of what the treehouse could look like. I went for a mix of earthy features and of course Alien features. For the inside especially, I wanted to make it look cosy and almost a roomt we would see at our own house, but the little quirks include the pilots chair and all the ship's buttons as well as the stair leading down through the tree.
The stairs through the tree, I wanted it to look both natural and alien-like, that it why I made the stairs metalic looking and the lights a clinical blue/white. However by keeping the bark of the tree as the sides, I think it looks really nicely contrasted.
I think doing the first image was my favourite. It was fun trying to fit alien things with something as earth-like and natural as a tree. Of course, I found it difficult at first, but then it all came together nicely and it was really fun to do. Little buts like a broken rocket at the side and just the glow of alien lights made it work.
